Main Text(s): Romans 8:31-39
Context: The letter to the Romans was written by Paul to believers in Rome, facing social pressures and the potential for condemnation for their faith in a society that was not always receptive to Christianity. Paul's letter sought to provide assurance and encouragement to the believers, highlighting the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. It addresses the struggles of Christians under the weight of condemnation and threat of persecution.
Big Idea: Believers have no reason to fear separation from God and His love.
Discussion Guide:
Read Romans 8:31-39. In this passage, we can see three key realities for Christ followers. We are:
I. Free from desperation (vv. 31-32)
Who might Paul mean when he mentions those who might be “against us”?
Have group members read Psalm 27:1 and Psalm 118:6. What promise can we claim from these verses?
What are some reminders in your personal life that God is for you?
According to this passage, what made Paul confident that God takes care of His people?
What is the “everything” (“all things” in other translations) that Paul speaks of in v. 32?
Does Paul’s statement in v. 32 mean that God will give us everything we want?

II. Free from accusation (vv. 33-34)
Have you felt accused or condemned as a follower of Christ? Explain.
On what grounds are we freed from those who would falsely accuse us or seek to condemn us?
What does it mean that God acts to “justify” us?
Where is Jesus Christ right now? What is He doing?
How does it help us in our daily lives to know Jesus intercedes for us?

III. Free from separation (vv. 35-39)
What threatening life experiences did Paul mention that we may think have potential to separate us from Christ’s love?
What does it mean to be “more than a conqueror?”
In these last two verses, what 10 powers does Paul list that are not able to separate us from Christ’s love?
Why might these things tempt us to believe that we had been separated from Christ?
